Sortu wants to express its stance against the decision taken by a British judge to hand over Fermin Vila to the Spanish authorities.
It must be highlighted that Fermin Vila himself has denounced in several times that his confession was obtained under torture; according to our opinion the rule of law can never leave unprotected those that have suffered harassment and torture.
That's why we are extremely worried about the treatment that Fermin Vila could get from the Spanish authorities. Abuses and lack of accountability in the enforcemente of the penitentiary law happen on a regular basis in Spain. According to that, the UK has just decided to hand over to Spain a man that might suffer serious abuse and human rights infringement.
Sortu asks to the European authorities and particularly the British administration to help bring to success the Basque Peace process and not to act friendly towards those that try to shatter it; the enemies of peace are acting through the use of violence and harassment on the peace initiatives and search the breakdown of the Basque process. Fermin Vila's case and prosecution is an attempt to bring the peace process to failure and make impossible a democratic resolution to the Basque political conflict. It is time to bring the Basque political prisoners back home and to stop the evil ways of securocrats and the enemies of peace.
