Sortu wishes to congratulate the Tamil people and especially the Tamil National Alliance for the results obtained in the elections that were celebrated this past weekend.

The Tamil National Alliance has obtained the support of the majority of the population which demonstrates that the Tamil people demand that their national, cultural and political rights be respected. This popular support signifies a new step in the recognition of these rights.

The government of Sri Lanka tried to exterminate the Tamil people in 2009, provoking thousands of deaths and refugees With the objective of destroying the LTTE and ending the political conflict they put into practice the cruelest repressive strategies. These electoral results manifest the failure of the government of Sri Lanka and demonstrate that a political conflict exists.

In these elections, celebrated four years after that massacre, the Tamil people have demonstrated that beyond the repression and strategy of war that they have suffered, they are alive and strong in the struggle for the rights as a people.
