Next March 21st Newroz is celebrated, the Kurdish new year's festival. For decades this date has represented in a special way the struggle of the Kurdish people for the recognition of their rights.
From Sortu, on such a special day, once again we wish to send fraternal greetings of solidarity to all the Kurdish people and their long struggle for freedom.
It has been one year since the historical declaration of Abdullah Öcalan which opened the doors to the hope of a new scenario of peace and democracy. The roadmap to peace presented by the Kurdish leader has meant a significant change in the situation of Kurdistan.
The representative of SORTU, Iraide Lejarreta, has participated in the conference "Women in Peace Processes" which took place today in the European Parliament.
In the conference they analysed the role that women have had in different peace processes. They remarked on the importance that in resolution processes, women have an active participation, in the negotiating processes as well as in the initiatives carried out in civil society.
Also among the participants in the conference were the candidates for Sinn Fein for the coming European elections, Lynn Ní Bhaoigheallain and Liadh Ní Riada. (in the picture with Iraide Lejarreta)
Today, February 13th, the Basque community of Idaho will express their thanks to the state of Idaho and pay homage to Pete Cenarrusa, who died in 2013. For years the state of Idaho has supported diverse initiatives of the Basque community. From cultural initiatives to those related to the Basque political reality.
There have been numerous declarations made throughout the years by the Idaho House of Representatives. In 1972, they denounced the practices of the Franco dictatorship; in 2002, they defended the right to decide for the Basque Country; and in 2013, they expressed their support for the Declaration of Aiete.
SORTU wishes to praise these contributions once again. And in a special manner, to give thanks to the role played by Pete Cenarrusa in all of these initiatives.
From SORTU, we want to send to all of the friends and family of Pete Cenarrusa our most heartfelt embrace. Even from such a distance, we will take part together with them in this homage.
Maite Ubiria, International Area Manager of SORTU.
